September 2019

The building & project consultancy team was in attendance at The Architect Journal Retrofit Awards, which saw them win the trophy for best office refurbishment in the 2,000 – 5,000 sq m (21,527 - 53,819 sq ft) category alongside Savills Investment Management (IM). The event was held on Wednesday 11th September 2019 at The Brewery in London.

The awards celebrate design, engineering and construction excellence that prolongs the life of the built environment, with the winners decided by a panel of industry experts from across the property sector.

The accolade was awarded for the work carried out to The Smithson office building in Farringdon. The team project managed the refurbishment works, which saw the upgrade of the outdated 1970s office block including a total overhaul of building systems to improve efficiency and future flexibility. The scheme, which is owned by the Charities Property Fund c/o Savills IM, beat competitors including Merchants Hall, 3 Cavendish Square and CORE.

Tom Davies, director in the London office project management team, comments: “We are delighted to be part of the winning team. The Smithson was an ambitious project and we were all incredibly excited to see the building restored to its former glory following the comprehensive refurbishment of the space. Coupling a strong aesthetic with sustainable elements has proven a success with occupiers as the scheme is now fully let.”

Angy Benitz, director in the fund management team at Savills IM, adds: "This award is a well-deserved recognition for the professional team that worked on the project. They approached the instruction with vision and focus to deliver a building that incorporated sustainable elements that are important to the investor but also appealed to occupiers. The works were delivered on time and on budget and the asset has delivered significant outperformance for our charity investors.”
